The Service Project Committee is pleased to announce Porchlight, Inc. as our Who’s New in Madison 2011-2012 Service Project.  As a not-for-profit, volunteer-intensive agency, Porchlight provides emergency shelter, food, employment services, counseling, and affordable transitional and permanent housing to homeless people in the Dane county area.  Porchlight’s services are designed to foster independence and the transition into permanent housing and employment.

PORCHLIGHT PROGRAMS

Transitional and Permanent Housing   Low-cost transitional and permanent housing with case management services are offered to homeless individuals and families through Porchlight’s Housing Program.  Operating more than 240 units in locations throughout Dane County, this program provided more than 109,000 nights of shelter to men, women, and children in 2009.

Men’s Drop-In Shelter   In 2010, 1,258 homeless persons received 31,954 nights of emergency shelter, two hot meals per day, personal grooming supplies, counseling services, and access to laundry facilities.

Hospitality House   This is a daytime resource center for homeless and low-income people in Dane County.  Services include employment and housing counseling, assistance in obtaining employment, telephone and mail services, and medical and legal assistance.

Safe Haven   Save Haven provides temporary housing and support services for homeless men and women with mental illness.

Brooks Street Kitchen Program   Porchlight residents have the opportunity to receive life skills and employment training through the Kitchen Program at the Brooks Street facility.  Participants in the program learn food preparation skills that help prepare them for employment in the food service industry.

Veterans Transitional Housing Program   Porchlight opened a facility at 1102 Spring Street where they can house 24 veterans.  This was funded with a major grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs and numerous other community foundations and groups.

Supportive and Other Programs   These include Eviction Prevention: DIGS, The Partnership for Transitional Opportunities Program, The Skills Training and Barrier Limiting Education Program, The Sobriety Training Orientation Program, and The Sobriety Training After Recovery Treatment Program.

A helping hand-not a handout.  A second chance.  A warm bed.   Hope.  Opportunity.
